The science behind Collagen MSM Plus®

Collagen MSM Plus® and Joint Health – Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) involves degradation of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone. Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness and locking.image013

  • Aging and high impact/load on joints can cause wear and tear on joint cartilage
  • Collagen makes up 70-95% of joint cartilage
  • Maintaining collagen levels inside cartilage is important to prevent OA

Proven effectiveness on knee Joints- Clinical study 2013 double blind, placebo controlled with specific collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® formula.

  • 100 participants, oral intake, Collagen peptides powder drink.
  • Collagen peptides 8 g/day or placebo(maltodextrin) 8 g/day

Collagen MSM Plus® and Bone health- Osteopenia and Osteoporosis

More than 30% of all postmenopausal women develop Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis has four major consequences on the bone:

  • Bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, which implies an increased risk of fractures.
  • Imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation.
  • Amount and variety of proteins in bone is altered.
  • Bone micro-architecture deteriorates.

Osteopenia is the pre-stage to Osteoporosis.

Normal bone and Osteoporotic bone.

Collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® restore Bone Mineral Density to a normal level

in vivo studies – results- Ovariectomized mice were used to simulate low bone mass density:  osteopenia

The measures show restoration of the bone mineral density value close to the level of the control group (which was not ovariectomized).

Same study demonstrated additional results of specific collagen peptides to:

  • increase bone solidity
  • increase bone size

Increase of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of the mice, in the control group (Control), the ovariectomized group fed without collagen peptides (Ovx), and the ovariectomized group fed with collagen peptides (Ovx + Collagen Peptides) after 12weeks. Groups with different letters indicate significant difference (p<0.05) a indicates a higher mean than b.

Collagen MSM Plus® and Muscle health – Sarcopenia (Loss of muscle with age)

  • A sufficient intake of proteins is very important to maintain a correct muscle mass. 20-30 g/day of high quality protein per meal recommended
  • The RDI for protein is 0.8g/kg of body weight/day for healthy adults and 1g/kg of body weight/day for elderly people. With age, diet is often too low in protein
  • Sarcopenia affects 30 % of 60+ years and 50 % of 80+ years

Results by Hays et al. (2009), showed that a supplement with collagen peptides maintained a better nitrogen balance than whey protein, suggesting its better suited to maintain lean muscle mass in in elderly women. Hays, N.P., Kim, H., Wells, A.M., Kajkenova, O. and Evans, W.J. 2009. J. Am. Diet.

Protein deficiency concern- changes in body mass

  • After the age of 30 the body composition starts to change. There is a reduction of 3 to 8% in lean muscle mass each decade.
  • The reduction can be more than 50% loss of tissue in those over 80 years of age.

Proteins are the major building blocks of muscles.

The intake of proteins is often decreasing in the elderly (low appetite etc.), even though the required amount is increasing

The positive effect on joint cells with specific collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® formula

Results of the 2011 study confirm the positive effect of specific collagen peptides on joint cells (chondrocytes). A dose of 10g of collagen peptides per day [1] has demonstrated a positive effect on joint pain reduction. The integrity of articular cartilage is dependent on the maintenance of the extracellular matrix, a process controlled by the joint cells, the chondrocytes. The objective of the present study with a cell culture model was to investigate the effect of collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® on the main components of the extracellular matrix of the cartilage: aggrecan and type II collagen.

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis which causes major disability worldwide. OA is characterized by cartilage destruction resulting in joint space narrowing and loss of function (figure 1). The result of ongoing cartilage destruction is irreversible damage to the extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage with ultimate loss of joint function [2]. Chondrocytes, the only cell type in cartilage, are the versatile regulators of cartilage equilibrium. Traumatic cartilage injury leads to an irreversible cartilage loss since differentiated chondrocytes do not divide and hence do not compensate for these defects [3]. There are no long-term effective treatments for OA.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of specific collagen peptides on the gene expression of 2 major constituents of the extracellular matrix of the cartilage: aggrecan [4] and type II collagen.

Assessment of the collagen peptide effects on cartilage specific gene expression

Cells were seeded and cell growth was measured until 8 days (figure 2). At the different end points mRNAs (see glossary) were extracted from the chondrocytes. The concentration of total mRNA was measured by optical density. Gene expression was then measured by quantitative PCR (qPCR, see glossary).

The expression of the cartilage extracellular matrix specific genes, aggrecan, collagen type II, was measured. The expression of the cartilage extracellular matrix specific genes, aggrecan, collagen type II, was measured

  1. Methods

The tests have been carried out by Atlantic Bone Screen Laboratory, Nantes, France (ABS).

Chondrocytes were collected from articular cartilage of 4-week-old male rats. Specific collagen peptides of bovine origin were used at 3 concentrations 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg/mL. Ibuprofen at 25µg/ml was used as a positive reference item as it is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

All the experiments have been done 3 times and the results are averages of 3 measurements

  1. Results Effect of collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® on cartilage specific gene expression

Collagen peptides at 0.1 or 1 mg/mL concentrations over 8 days significantly enhanced the expression of aggrecan and type II collagen mRNA (fi gure 3). These results demonstrate that collagen peptides in collagen MSM Plus® specifically enhanced the chondrocyte gene expression of the cartilage extra cellular matrix components.

  1. Conclusion

After 8 days of treatment, collagen peptides at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mg/mL enhanced significantly the expression of cartilage specific markers: aggrecan and type II collagen.

In this study, collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® formula have a similar effect on joint cells as Ibuprofen, a usual medication against inflammation.

These data confirm that specific collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® may prevent cartilage matrix degradation by increasing the production of aggrecan and type II collagen, in line with previous studies. The data also strengthen the hypothesis that collagen peptides may be recognized as a signal of cartilage degradation by chondrocytes which therefore activate the synthesis of aggrecan and type II collagen as a response.

These results show that collagen peptides used in Collagen MSM Plus® may be used to prevent the degradation of cartilage and thus to prevent discomfort and joint pain due to this degradation.

Aggrecan: the major proteoglycan of the articular cartilage, i.e. a protein modified with large carbohydrates. This molecule is important in the proper functioning of articular cartilage because it provides a hydrated gel structure that endows the cartilage with load-bearing properties.  mRNA : Messenger RNA, is a molecule encoding a chemical «blueprint» for a protein product. mRNA is transcribed from a DNA template, and carries coding information to the sites of protein synthesis.  qPCR : quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, is a laboratory technique used to amplify and simultaneously quantify a targeted DNA or RNA molecule.

Article on Collagen MSM Plus ® regarding its main ingredient MSM by M.Sc. Pharmacist George Manios

MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane or dimethyl sulfone) is an organic sulfur compound with high bioavailability and crucial for many functions of the human body. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood and dairy products are the main natural sources of MSM. Unfortunately a large amount of it is destroyed by washing, steaming and baking foods. Poor diet and modern lifestyle also decrease the levels of MSM in our bodies.

According to scientific research and clinical studies that have been conducted over the last thirty years in various universities and research centers around the world, MSM has shown to have strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and detoxifying properties. In cases of osteoarthritis taking 500mg MSM daily for three months, provides analgesic and antiinflammatory action and contributes to joint health. According to a double – blind clinical study, the results are accelerated when combining with the administration of glucosamine sulfate, significantly improving the quality of life of the patient. The MSM helps to combat the back and neckpain, it is important to tissue regeneration and is used to promote healthy joints and cartilage. It relaxes the muscles doing it useful in rehabilitation of people who have suffered sports injuries. It is also ideal as a natural treatment of tendinitis and tennis elbow.  MSM contributes to the production of elastin, collagen and keratin of a substance that is essential for the health of hair and nails. It enhances the mucosa of the digestive tract and the urinary tract, helping in some cases of constipation and providing natural antiparasitic activity, demonstrating that the MSM (organic sulfur) is the ultimate health ally. Our body uses MSM in synergy with vitamin C to create new, healthy cells. Without proper levels of MSM, our bodies are unable to produce good and healthy cells resulting in problems such as loss of flexibility, wrinkles, varicose veins, dry skin, digestive disorders, joint problems and more. Every year we discover more miraculous properties of the MSM and many universities and research centers focus on the development and study of its properties. Let’s start now looking for more natural ways to deal withthe most common lifelimitingdiseases and let’s not forget that nature is our ally.
